Downsized Miniature Swine A new Spin on the Oldest Model

The nonclinical studies required to progress novel therapeutics through clinical trials involve using non-rodent laboratory species. Selection of the non-rodent species is typically based on metabolism (for small molecules) or pharmacology (biologics). For most programs to date, this involves using nonhuman primates (NHPs) and beagle dogs. There has been increasing pressure to limit the use of these species in nonclinical safety studies, which provided an opportunity for miniature swine to be considered on a broader scale. Miniature swine have been shown to share many metabolic similarities with humans, making them a viable option for small molecules. As the field of biologics continues to expand, there are programs where the pharmacological target is highly conserved across species, and so again, the miniature swine is a viable option.

Sinclair Bioresources has downsized the Sinclair lineage of miniature swine to get a miniature swine the size of a beagle dog that reaches sexual maturity by 4.5 months old. The Sinclair Nanopig is a very powerful non-rodent alternative for nonclinical safety studies and reproduces quickly, which helps adjust to the demand. Miniature swine models are regularly used for nonclinical safety involving different routes of exposure. With its new size, the Sinclair Nanopig creates an attractive alternative non-rodent model to the beagle or NHP.
